Day 2: Beginnings and Betrayals: Eden's Fall and Herod's Fear

In Genesis 2:18-4:1-16, God creates Eve as a companion for Adam. They live in the Garden of Eden, where they disobey God's command by eating from the Tree of Knowledge, influenced by a serpent. This act leads to their punishment and expulsion from Eden. The narrative continues with their sons, Cain and Abel. Cain, jealous of God favoring Abel's offering, kills Abel. God punishes Cain to wander the earth, but also marks him for protection against revenge. This passage highlights themes of disobedience, consequences, and divine justice in early Biblical history.

In Matthew 2:1-18, wise men or Magi from the East follow a star to Bethlehem to worship the newborn Jesus, presenting him with gifts. King Herod, feeling threatened by the birth of a new 'king,' instructs the Magi to report back to him. Instead, after their visit, they are divinely instructed to avoid Herod, and Joseph is warned to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt for safety. Herod's response to this perceived betrayal is the massacre of male infants in Bethlehem, an event prophesied as a time of great mourning. After Herod's death, Joseph, Mary, and Jesus return, settling in Nazareth, which fulfills another prophecy about Jesus.
